Baegunjeong

※ Please note before visiting: due to a wildfire in March 2025, access to the Gaehosong Forest is not possible. Baegunjeong is a pavilion built in 1568 (the 1st year of King Seonjo's reign) by Gwibong Kim Su-il (1528–1583), who received the site from his father, Cheonggye Kim Jin (1500–1580). Although Kim Su-il passed the state examination, he did not take up an official post; instead he remained in his hometown, devoting himself to scholarship and the education of younger generations amid nature. The pavilion measures three kan across the front and two kan on the side, and its roof is built in the hip-and-gable (paljak) style, which when viewed from the side resembles the shape of the Chinese character for 'eight' (八). The signboard calligraphy was written by Heo Mok (1595–1682) himself, but because there is concern it might be lost, it is kept separately, so at present nothing hangs there.
