About this place

Bongang Seowon was originally established in Moran-dong, Yongjin-myeon in 1754 (the 30th year of King Yeongjo) under the royal-chartered name 'Moran Seowon', and was moved to its present site in 1852 (the 3rd year of King Cheoljong), when the name was also changed to 'Bongang'. It was subsequently demolished following Daewongun's abolition order in 1869 but reestablished in 1899 in accordance with the restoration of royally chartered seowon. The seowon has a shrine enshrining Yi Bang-gan, the fourth son of King Taejo Yi Seonggye, as the principal figure, along with Yi Heon-gu (Lord Chunggango), who served as Jeolla Province Governor. Memorial rites are held twice a year, in the 2nd and 8th months. The shrine is a three-bay-front, two-bay-side hip-and-gable roof structure, and the lecture hall has the appearance of an ordinary dwelling.
