About this place

Bongseo Temple is located on the slopes of Geonjisan (127 m) in Seocheon and is a branch temple of Magoksa in Gongju. The exact date of its founding is unknown, but it appears in records from 1799 (the 23rd year of King Jeongjo), indicating it existed by at least that time. Historically, it was a place of study for late Joseon civil official Seokbuk Sin Gwangsu (1712–1775), independence activist Wolnam Yi Sang-jae (1850–1927), and Seocheon poet Seokcho Sin Eung-sik (1909–1975). The current buildings include the Geungnakjeon hall, the Samseongak shrine, the Simgemdang, and the temple office. The Geungnakjeon enshrines a Wooden Seated Amitabha Triad made in 1619 (the 11th year of King Gwanghaegun), designated as a national treasure. Geonjisan, where the temple stands, also has the Baekje-era Geonjisanseong mountain fortress. Nearby attractions include Munheon Seowon, the Hansan Ramie Museum, the Hansan Sogokju brewery, and the Hansan Eupseong wall.
