Bungangseowon

About this place

This academy began in 1613 (the 5th year of King Gwanghaegun), when local Confucian scholars, by common consent, founded a shrine to local worthies, Hyanghyeonsa, to honor the scholarship and virtuous conduct of Master Yi Hyeon-bo and there enshrined his memorial tablet. Later, in 1700 (the 26th year of King Sukjong), it was reorganized into an academy and took on the role of honoring past worthies and providing local education, but it was demolished in 1868 (the 5th year of King Gojong) under Daewongun's decree abolishing the academies. In 1967 it was restored to the west of the old site, where the portrait was enshrined and the seokchaerye rite was performed. In 1976, as it came to be submerged by the construction of the Andong Dam, the academy and the head family's house were relocated to the old site of Dogok-jaesa in Ungok; then in 2006, as part of the project to reorganize the Nongam historic site, it was moved to its present location, where it remains today.
