Songhak Seowon

About this place

Songhak Seowon was built during the reign of King Sukjong (1674–1720). It enshrines Yi Hwang (1501–1570), Kim Seong-il (1538–1593), and Jang Hyeon-gwang (1554–1637). Songhak Seowon consists of the shrine, which is the space for memorial rites; the lecture hall, which is the space for study, along with the eastern and western dormitories (dongjae and seojae); and the outer three-gate. The lecture hall is four bays across the front and two bays deep. Centered on the middle wooden-floored hall, it forms a central-hall-with-side-rooms arrangement with heated ondol rooms on the left and right. It bears a Songhak Seowon signboard. The eastern and western dormitories are identical in building style. They are four bays across the front and two bays deep. There is a veranda floor (twenmaru) at the front. The shrine, Jondeoksa, enshrines the spirit tablets of Yi Hwang, Kim Seong-il, and Jang Hyeon-gwang. It is three bays across the front and one bay deep.
