Sungmundae — meaning 'hall that reveres learning' — was the Silla-era royal library and educational office responsible for managing the royal court's books and providing instruction to the Crown Prince. The Gyeongju city government and the Cultural Heritage Administration named this facility Sungmundae in order to preserve and promote the brilliant thousand-year history of Silla. It serves as an exhibition centre for artefacts unearthed during ongoing excavations of the Silla Royal Palace site at Wolseong, sharing research findings with the public.
