Seungcheonsa

About this place

Seungcheonsa Temple is located in Seongnam-myeon, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do. The temple is famous for King Sejong the Great and the Seungcheon mineral spring. According to old records, King Sejong the Great is said to have visited this place to treat an eye ailment while creating the Hunminjeongeum (the Korean alphabet). Moreover, the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty (the Sejong Sillok) record that the Seungcheon spring water from the temple was carried all the way to Hanyang (Seoul) to be drunk. On the green lawn in front of Seungcheonsa stands a stone pagoda carved with the Four Heavenly Kings, the guardian deities of Buddhism, a sight through which one can strongly feel the teachings of the Buddha. It is a place where you can sense the beautiful architecture and the history of Buddhism, drink natural carbonated water, and enjoy a rewarding visit.
