Andong Hyanggyo

At Andong Hyanggyo, the records concerning its founding date and the Confucian school were all burned during the Korean War, making documentary verification impossible. However, considering that Andong was a great prefecture in the Goryeo period and that many notable figures emerged after the founding of Joseon, it is presumed to have been established quite early. In particular, the 'Goryeosa Jeolyo' records that a hyanggyo already existed when King Gongmin took refuge in Andong-bu at the end of the Goryeo dynasty. Andong Hyanggyo was originally located within the grounds of the present Andong City Hall in Myeongnyun-dong, Andong, but after being destroyed during the Korean War it was restored at its current site in 1987. During the Joseon period Andong Hyanggyo was established on a large scale (daeseol), and the same scale was applied when it was restored in 1987. At present, the Daeseongjeon enshrines the Four Worthies of the Song dynasty and the Eighteen Worthies of Korea.
