About this place

Flagpole supports (danggan jiju) are installed at temple entrances; on festival or ritual days a banner called 'dang' was hung on a long pole (danggan), and the two stone pillars beside it that hold the pole upright are called danggan jiju. The Unheung-dong supports in Andong date to the Unified Silla period, standing 2.6 m tall; their upper parts were damaged in the Korean War, and the round base stone that held the danggan between them remains, simple and unadorned. The temple they belonged to is unknown but is presumed to be Beomnimsa, the same temple as the nearby Five-Story Brick Pagoda. The Andong Unheung-dong Five-Story Brick Pagoda is also a Unified Silla brick pagoda, partly destroyed in the Korean War and restored in 1962; after multiple repairs since its founding, its original form has been somewhat altered.
