Yeogye Myoyeok

The Hamyang Yeo Clan Cemetery is the ancestral burial ground of the Hamyang Yeo clan, located in Gocheok 2-dong, Guro-gu, Seoul. The founding ancestor of the Hamyang Yeo clan was Yeo Eo-mae, who served as a Hallim scholar of the Tang dynasty and was naturalized in Silla in 877 to escape the Huang Chao Rebellion. In the cemetery, the tombs of Sungui-rang-gong—who served as Jwarang and Champan of the Board of Taxation under King Taejong in early Joseon—and his wife, Lady Sim of the Cheongsong clan, are arranged one above the other. The tombs were created in 1428 (the 10th year of King Sejong); the wife was a granddaughter of the state councillor Sim Baek-deok and a daughter of the judge Sim Ui-gu. The cemetery covers a total of 1,025㎡ and contains two burial mounds, one tombstone, two stone offering tables, and two civil and two military officials' statues; it holds high historical value for the study of early-Joseon tomb styles and stone monuments.
