About this place

Within Yeongdeung Citizens' Park in Iksan stands a large mound-shaped hill, designated the Yeongdeung-dong Archaeological Site as a local heritage site of Iksan on 30 May 2002. Artefact traces were found during residential development of Yeongdeung-dong, prompting excavation by the Wonkwang University Mahan-Baekje Cultural Research Institute between 1995 and 1996. The investigation revealed five dwelling sites from the Bronze Age: three rectangular house floors and two circular ones. One rectangular dwelling floor was located on the original Yeongdeung-dong site; the remaining four were transferred from adjacent areas. The Yeongdeung-dong site is the first early Bronze Age site confirmed in the Iksan area and, together with survey of chief-class Mahan-period burial mounds (jugu-myo), allows scholars to trace the lineage of Bronze Age culture in Iksan and confirm Mahan-period culture in the region.
