About this place

Ogoejeong Pavilion in Sameun-ri, Samgye-myeon, Imsil-gun was built by Donam Oh Yang-son, the founding ancestor of the Haeju Oh clan who settled in Noeye-ri. The pavilion stands on a high hill surrounded by large zelkova and oak forests, creating a beautiful landscape. It was built on well-crafted granite foundation stones with short lower pillars supporting round columns. The structure has three bays in front and two on the side with a double-eaved hip-and-gable tiled roof, with a room in the center surrounded by a corridor on all four sides—a typical Honam-style pavilion. Doors that fold open are fitted on all four sides of the room so that the surrounding scenery can be enjoyed when needed, and a balustrade runs around the wooden floor on all four sides. Oh Yang-son, who held the rank of chamberlain, was a disciple of Kim Goeng-pil (1454-1504). During the Gimyo Literati Purge of 1519 (the 14th year of King Jungjong), he fled to Suwon, and in 1521 moved to Mokgichon in Malcheonbang, Namwon, where he lived in hiding and built this pavilion. The name 'Ogoe' comes from the five pagoda trees (sophora japonica) planted beside the pavilion, following the ancient Chinese custom of Wang Jin who planted three pagoda trees.
