Okcheon Seowon was built in 1667 (the 8th year of King Hyeonjong) as the Okcheon Jeongsa (study lodge) to hold memorial rites for Im Chun. In 1711 (the 37th year of King Sukjong), the local Confucian community erected five buildings and additionally enshrined three worthies—Ban Yu, Tae Du-nam, and Song Bok-gi—so that, honoring four worthies in all, it was elevated to a seowon (Confucian academy). Demolished by the 1868 (5th year of King Gojong) order abolishing the academies, the Sanghyeonsa shrine and the Myeonggyodang hall were restored in 1920, and in 1989 it was moved to its present location.
