Ugok Seowon

About this place

Ugok Seowon is a Confucian academy located in Eop-ri, Uiseong-eup, Uiseong-gun, where in 1818 the local Confucian scholars, by public consensus, enshrined the memorial tablet to honor Oh Guk-hwa, a scholar of the late Goryeo period. While it served a role in venerating past sages and in local education, it was demolished in 1868 by the Daewongun's edict abolishing Confucian academies, and was restored in 1980. The buildings within the grounds include Sungjeolsa, Sunguidang, Sinmun, Dongjae, Seojae, Jeonsacheong, the main gate, and living quarters. In the shrine, Sungjeolsa, the memorial tablet of Oh Guk-hwa is enshrined. Sunguidang is the lecture hall of the academy, consisting of a central hall and side rooms on both sides, and is used for various events of the academy, gatherings of Confucian scholars, and lectures on scholarship. Sinmun is used as the entrance for the officiants during memorial rites, and Jeonsacheong is used as the place for preparing the sacrificial offerings. Dongjae is used as lodging for the resident staff, and Seojae as the place where the Confucian students gather to study.
