Uljinhyanggyo

Uljinhyanggyo is an educational facility founded in 1484 in Wolbyeon-dong, Eumnae-ri, Uljin-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do. A hyanggyo is a national educational institution of the Goryeo and Joseon periods, established to enshrine the tablets of eminent Confucian scholars, perform rites, and educate and edify the local populace. It was relocated to Goseong-ri in 1697 and then to its present site in 1872. In 1878, through the efforts of magistrate Choi Hyeong-jik and the local Confucian community, Daeseongjeon was renovated. In 1950, during the Korean War, all the ancillary buildings - including Myeongnyundang and Seojae - were destroyed except for Daeseongjeon and Dongjae; in 1970 and 1976 the walls and the caretaker's quarters (jusa) were repaired, and in 1980 Myeongnyundang was rebuilt. The surviving buildings include the 8-bay Daeseongjeon, the 7-bay Myeongnyundang, the 5-bay Dongjae, and the inner three-bay gate, and the tablets of Confucian scholars are enshrined in Daeseongjeon.
