Jain Hyanggyo

Jain Hyanggyo is a public educational institution built in Jain-hyeon of Gyeongsang-do during the Joseon period, first constructed during the reign of King Gongmin of Goryeo (r. 1351-1374). It was rebuilt during the reign of King Myeongjong of Joseon (r. 1545-1567), but was burned down during the Japanese invasions of 1592. In the 7th year of Gwanghaegun (1615) it was moved to the foot of Docheonsan, and in the 4th year of King Yeongjo (1728) it was relocated to its present site. The Daeseongjeon was repaired in 1900 and 1922, the Myeongnyundang in 1924, and the Daeseongjeon again in 1926. The buildings remaining today include the Daeseongjeon, Myeongnyundang, Moseongnu, and Dongjae. In the Daeseongjeon, the memorial tablets of Confucius are enshrined at the center, along with those of his disciples and the sages of China and Korea.
