About this place

Pihyangjeong Pavilion (literally 'Fragrant Unfolding Pavilion'), widely known as the finest pavilion in Honam, originally had lotus ponds called Sangnyeonji and Hanyeonji in front and behind. The Sangnyeonji was filled in during the Japanese colonial period, and only the Hanyeonji (Taechang Reservoir) remains today. The pavilion takes its name from the lotus fragrance that fills the surroundings when the flowers bloom. There is a legend that the scholar Choe Chi-won, while serving as governor of Taesan County during the Silla period, roamed and composed verses here, but the exact founding date of the pavilion is unknown. The present pavilion dates from the mid-Joseon period, open on all four sides with a railing all around. It is an important cultural heritage for the study of mid-Joseon wooden architecture. Nearby attractions include Taein Hyanggyo, Taein Dongheon, Jeongtosa Temple, and a traditional house cultural experience center.
