About this place

Cheongdo Haknam Seowon is a Confucian academy built in 1977 to honor Choe Chiwon (pen name Goun). Entering through the three-bay mountain-shaped main gate at the front, one finds, across the courtyard and directly ahead, a five-bay lecture hall with a hip-and-gable tiled roof; to the left and right of the front of the lecture hall are placed the eastern and western dormitories (dongjae and seojae). On the hill behind the western dormitory stands, within a separate enclosure, the Gyedongsa shrine, which enshrines the portrait of Goun—a Tangible Cultural Heritage of Gyeongsangbuk-do; to the right of Gyedongsa is placed the Chunghyogak, built to commemorate the loyalty and filial piety of Choe Yeojun (of Gyeongsan), the founding settler of the Gyeongju Choe clan in Cheongdo.
