About this place

Seowon were private educational institutions established by local Confucian scholars in the mid-Joseon period for academic research and memorial rites. Hosan Seowon is a seowon located on the south bank of the Mangyeong River in the vicinity of Samnye-eup. The exact founding date of this seowon is unknown, but it was demolished in 1868 (the 5th year of King Gojong) by Heungseon Daewongun's edict to abolish seowon. It was rebuilt during the Japanese colonial period but partially burned down during the Korean War and rebuilt again in 1958 to the present day. Currently the grounds contain a gate, shrine hall, and lecture hall, and a memorial rite is held every year around the end of the 2nd lunar month. The surrounding area offers a beautiful landscape with the Bibijeong Pavilion, the Mangyeong River Railway Bridge, the Bibijeong Art Train (old Mangyeong River Railway Bridge), and the Honam Plain. It is also conveniently accessible by public transportation, being close to Samnye Station on the Jeolla Railway Line.
