About this place

Founded in 1603 (the 36th year of King Seonjo's reign) by consensus of local Confucian scholars to commemorate the scholarship and virtuous conduct of Yi Mun-jeong, Yi Baek-yu, Yi Gyeong-dong, and Yi Mok, and to enshrine their memorial tablets. Originally located below Gonjisan Mountain, Hwanggang Seowon was damaged by fire during the Imjin War, then rebuilt, but was abolished in the 6th year of King Gojong's reign (1869). It was rebuilt in March 1898 on the former site of the Hwanggang Scholars' Retreat below Hwangbangsan Mountain to the west of Jeonju. Upon its restoration, Yu Bun and Yi Deong-nin were additionally enshrined, and later Gang Hae-u was also added. Memorial rites are held each year on the first Jeong day (初丁) of the third lunar month.
