About this place

A seowon is a private educational institution established by local Confucian scholars from the mid-Joseon period for scholarly research and memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars. Deogam Seowon in Jisa-myeon, Imsil-gun, was built in 1863 and enshrines Jeong Mongju (Poeun) as the central figure, with Choe Yang added. In 1821 (Sunjo 21st year), Jeong Jiyeon was further added, and in 1829 (Sunjo 29th year) Bak Jongsu was added. In 1868 (Gojong 5th year), it was demolished under Heungseon Daewongun's nationwide seowon abolition order and restored in 1965. The buildings include a shrine, lecture hall, main gate, middle gate, and caretaker's quarters. The lecture hall is a hip-and-gable roof building (4 bays front, 2 bays side), and the shrine is a gabled-roof building (3 bays front, 2 bays side).
