About this place

Changgang Seowon is an academy established to honor Chuppo Hwang Sin (1560–1617). Hwang Sin was a mid-Joseon civil official who studied under Seong Hon and Yi I. He passed the royal examination with top honors, rose through various offices, and was promoted to Cheolchung-janggun during the Imjin War, receiving the posthumous title of Right State Councilor. Founded in the 7th year of King Injo (1629), the academy received the plaque 'Changgang' from the king in the 8th year of King Sukjong (1682), becoming a royally-designated academy. It was later closed by Heungseon Daewongun's decree abolishing private academies, and relocated and restored at its current site in 1966. Surviving structures include the shrine, the lecture hall, and the east and west dormitories. Ceremonies are held on the 15th day of the 3rd and 9th lunar months each year.
