Gangok Seowon was founded in the 16th year of King Yeongjo's reign (1740) and dismantled in the 5th year of King Gojong's reign (1868) before being restored in 1971. The academy enshrines Yu Dong-su (pen name Nogok, 1579–1654), a civil official of the late Joseon period. Yu Dong-su distinguished himself by suppressing a local strongman's revolt while serving as magistrate of Noseong County in the 24th year of King Injo's reign (1646). The academy holds texts including the Gangok Seowon Ji (Academy Record), Nogok Yujeok (Relics of Nogok), Mohyeon Gyean (Alumni Register), Bokseolrok, and Simwonrok.
