About this place

A seowon is a private educational institution established by local Confucian scholars from the mid-Joseon period onward for scholarly research and memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars. Hyeonju Seowon is located in Hyeongye-ri, Jisa-myeon, Imsil-gun. In 1704 (Sukjong 30th year), by the consensus of local Confucian scholars, it was established to commemorate the scholarship and virtue of Yi Neunggan and Jeong Yeom, enshrining their spirit tablets. In 1707 Kim Bokheung, Byeon Yu, and Jeong Gyeon were added. Having served in the preservation of local heritage and local education, it was demolished in 1868 (Gojong 5th year) under Heungseon Daewongun's abolition order. The following year, local scholars established a ceremonial altar and have conducted rites since; the seowon was restored after liberation. The buildings within the compound include a three-bay shrine, a three-bay lecture hall, and inner gates. Memorial rites are held here every year on a mid-day in the second month.
