About this place

Yucheon Seowon is a late Joseon-era seowon located in Yeongjeon-ri, Boan-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do. Founded in 1711 (Sukjong 37th year), it enshrined Heo Jindong, and the following year Kim Taeksam was added. In 1768 (Yeongjo 44th year), the brothers Kim Hoeng and Kim Myeong were additionally enshrined. Demolished in 1865 (Gojong 2nd year) under nationwide seowon abolition orders, only the remains and memorial stone were left until descendants restored it in October 1999. It has been restored with an outer three-gate and one shrine building. The shrine is a double-eave gabled-roof building, three bays wide and two bays deep. The 'Yucheon Seowon' plaque hangs on the center of the outer gate. From the parking lot, climbing stairs leads to the outer gate; to the east in front of the gate stands the Yucheon Seowon restoration commemorative stone erected in 2000, and further east are the remaining foundation stones and stone materials from the original seowon. According to the caretaker, the original seowon site extended north to south from the road leading from the village hall to the seowon on the left, up to the restored seowon site, and east to west from the sides of the road leading up to the seowon, including the areas where houses now stand, to the eastern field of the restored seowon.
