Sanun Village

Sanun Village is a traditional yangban village in Uiseong known as the "Daegam (High Official) Village," a clan settlement of the Yeongcheon Yi family with beautiful natural scenery. The village is situated on gentle hills and flatland, with Geumseongsan Mountain, which holds countless legends, behind it and Bibongsan Mountain beside it. In the valley of Geumseongsan on the village side there is a reservoir, and rice paddies stretch along the valley. Also, the Ssanggyecheon Stream flows to the south of the village, so farmland has developed in the surroundings. In terms of geomancy, it is described as a typical baesan-imsu (mountain-backed, water-facing) terrain with "an exquisite formation of a fairy sitting before a mirror and combing her hair." The name of Sanun Village originated from the fact that during the flourishing of Buddhism in the Silla period, clouds were seen swirling below Sujeong Valley, so it was called "Sanun" (Mountain Cloud). During the reign of King Seonjo of Joseon, Hakdong Yi Gwang-jun, who served as Governor of Gangwon-do, settled here and formed the village; later, figures such as Gyeongjeong Yi Min-seong, who served as a royal secretary during the reign of Gwanghaegun, and Ungok Yi Hui-bal, who served as Minister of Punishments during the reign of King Hyeonjong, lived here. This traditional village retains many designated cultural properties and traditional houses, such as Hangnok Jeongsa, Uiseong Ungokdang, Uiseong Souidang, and Uiseong Jeomudang. Visitors can also experience hanok (traditional Korean house) stays in the traditional hanok village, and since it is connected to Sanun Ecological Park, it is good to tour both together.
