About this place

The Dudong Church Old Main Hall is the original sanctuary of Dudong Church, built in 1929. The church began in 1923 when a worship space was established in the guest quarters of wealthy village patron Park Jae-sin. In 1929, the congregation built an L-shaped (giyeok-ja) hanok-style church on the current site. The oldest church building in Iksan, it served as the main hall until the present sanctuary was erected in 1964 and now displays historical photographs of the church. L-shaped churches were built throughout the country, but today only Geumsanchurch in Gimje, North Jeolla Province, and the Dudong Church old hall remain. It is an important structure for studying the spread of Protestantism in Korea and early church architecture, as it reflects traditional Confucian culture in ecclesiastical design.
