About this place

Bocheonsa Temple in Gumi faces the Nakdong River with Maebongsan Mountain as a screen behind it. It is a branch temple of Jikjisa, the head temple of the Eighth District of the Jogye Order. The temple was destroyed during the Imjin War and only its name survived, until a stone Buddha was discovered and believers in the area built a protective pavilion in 1595. According to legend, the 25th Goryeo King Chungyeol's son Wang Sogun fell ill and was cured by drinking from a spring called 'Bocheon' (Precious Spring) here, giving the temple its name Bocheonsa. The main hall enshrines the Seated Stone Buddha of Gumi Haepyeong-ri (a Unified Silla period Buddha), estimated to date from the mid-9th century.
