About this place

The Mangjae-dong Standing Stone Buddha is a large stone Buddha carved on the mid-slope of Manjebong Peak, a ridge of Duseungsan Mountain in Jeongeup, Jeollabuk-do. It is also called the Daeam Stone Buddha. The statue wears a wide-brimmed hat-like cap on its head, suggesting Confucian influence was incorporated into the imagery. The shoulders are somewhat hunched, and there are robe folds at the collar. Below the wrists, three parallel horizontal lines descend. The right hand is raised to shoulder height with the palm facing outward and fingertips pointing upward; the left hand similarly faces outward with fingertips pointing downward. The artistic effort is concentrated in the expression of the face and hands, giving it a folk art character. The entire statue is carved from a single large rock, which is a notable feature, and it is in good condition. Nearby attractions include Changdong Seowon Confucian Academy, Baegunam Standing Stone Buddha, Malmok Jeongteo and Persimmon Tree, the birthplace of General Jeon Bong-jun, and the Malmok Marketplace monument, allowing for a combined tour.
