About this place

Daebisa Temple, a branch temple of Donghwasa of the Jogye Order's 9th District, traces its origin to Sojakgapsa (Little Magpie Cape Temple), one of the five great temples surrounding Unmunsa of Cheongdo during the 6th century Silla period. Also known as Daebigapsa, it relocated to its current site during the Goryeo period. The name Daebisa derives from the Buddhist concept of 'great compassion' (daejadaebil). According to tradition, a Silla queen once stayed here for an extended retreat, leading to the renaming from Sojakgapsa to Daebigapsa. The temple was founded in 566 (the 27th year of King Jinheung of Silla) by a divine monk and restored in 600 (the 22nd year of King Jinpyeong) by the national master Wongwang. Its main hall, Daewungjeon, was designated a Treasure in 1985 and dates to approximately the 16th century.
