About this place

Geojosa Temple, affiliated with the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, is said to have been founded in 738 (the 2nd year of Silla King Hyosung) by the monk Wonchham, or alternatively during the reign of King Gyeongdeok by royal command. Later, in the 13th year of King Jinpyeong, the monks Hyerim and Beopchwa built the Yeongsanjeon Hall to enshrine 500 Arhats, making it famous as a powerful sacred site. Geojosa's Yeongsanjeon Hall is designated National Treasure No. 14 and was constructed in 1375 (the 1st year of King U of Goryeo). It enshrines a painting of the Vulture Peak Assembly by Sang-eon, a stone Shakyamuni Buddha, the Bodhisattva Dipankara, the Bodhisattva Maitreya crafted from natural stone by the monk Cheonghwa, and 526 Arhat saints.
