About this place

Jeonggaksa Temple is reached by turning off the road between Buyeo and Nonsan toward Taejosan Mountain, where the site was created by cutting into the hillside. The temple is said to have been founded during the Baekje period, though no documentary evidence has yet been found to confirm this. Within the temple grounds there are five stupa, including a bell-shaped stupa at the left of the entrance. During repairs to the foundation of one stupa in 1958, Buddhist relics were unearthed and examined by the Buyeo Museum. These stupa groups have been designated as local cultural heritage of Buyeo County. The main hall enshrines a triad of Buddha statues; while the central Shakyamuni Buddha was made in modern times, the bodhisattva statues on either side date to the Joseon period. The two bodhisattva statues, believed to predate the 18th century, have both historical and artistic value and have been designated as cultural heritage materials of South Chungcheong Province.
