About this place

Although no definitive records of the founding date of Munsusa Temple have been passed down, a founding document (balhwamun) discovered in 1973 inside a gilt bronze seated Buddha enshrined in the Geungnakbojeon records the year 'Chungjong 2' (1346, the 29th King Chunmok of Goryeo), indicating it was founded during the Goryeo period. The Geungnakbojeon is a beautiful and majestic building with a mixed jupo and dap-o style, designated a Chungcheongnam-do Tangible Cultural Heritage. In spring the surrounding mountains and pastures are adorned with cherry blossoms and wildflowers, evoking a painting. The Munsusa gilt bronze seated Buddha, enshrined in the Geungnakbojeon, is a seated height of 70 cm with a knee span of 50 cm. Created in the 2nd year of King Chunmok (1346), it represents the Goryeo late-period Buddhist sculpture style together with the Gold-Bronze Medicine Buddha of Janggoksa (Treasure), and the detailed expressive technique shows a refined and elegant appearance.
