About this place

The exact founding date of Taebongsa Temple is unknown, but it is presumed to have been established in the first half of the 7th century during the reign of King Mu of Baekje, when he was building his power base in the Iksan region. The current temple was re-established after Sim Myoryeonhwa Bosal, while praying for the longevity of her only son in 1934, received a divine vision in a dream from a mountain spirit at the eastern foot of Taebong Mountain, where she discovered three stone Buddhas. This led to the construction of a prayer hall and the rebuilding of the temple, which was then named 'Taebongsa' after Taebong Mountain. Taebong Mountain has a legend that Jun, the last king of Gija Joseon, fled from Wei Man to the Mahan territory, and after praying on Taebong Mountain and receiving three sons, buried the placentas on this mountain. Even today, it is said that many people offer prayers here hoping to have a son, influenced by this legend.
