Changyeongnu

About this place

It is said to have been built in 1428 (the 10th year of King Sejong) by the magistrate Ha Dam; according to another account, the eight princes of Queen Soheon each built two bays for their mother, and it was rebuilt in 1688 after a fire. A two-story pavilion measuring four bays across the front and four bays on the side, it is designated a Treasure. It served as the ritual hall for the tomb of Sim Hong-bu (the founding ancestor of the Cheongsong Sim clan) on Bogwangsan Mountain opposite, and it is said that ancestral rites were held here when flooding of the Yongjeoncheon Stream during the rainy season made it impossible to reach the tomb. The name Changyeongnu was coined by the provincial governor Hong Yeo-bang during an inspection tour at the request of magistrate Ha Dam: upon climbing the pavilion and looking on the tomb of the Sim clan's founding ancestor, he could not but praise the auspicious event of having produced Queen Soheon, and so named it.
