This shrine was built in the 13th year of King Gwanghaegun's reign (1621) to honor the spirit of Kim Si-seup (pen name Maewoldang, 1435-1493) and Kim Hyo-jong (pen name Uong, 1414-1493), who withdrew to Hongsan after the dethronement of King Danjong. Kim Si-seup was a scholar of the early Joseon period and the author of Geumo Sinhwa, Korea's first classical Chinese novel. The present Cheongilsa was temporarily closed under Heungseon Daewongun's order to abolish seowon and was rebuilt in 1970. The overall layout has the shrine on a hill following the natural terrain, with a four-pillared gate in front, and below the steps, the Cheongpunggak pavilion and the Sujiksa caretaker's house arranged on either side. Nearby attractions include Hongsan Hyanggyo, Hongsan Gaeksa, Hongsan Dongheon, and Hongsan Agricultural Resort.
