Chuncheonseowon

About this place

Chuncheonseowon, located in Pacheon-ri, Buhang-myeon, Gimcheon-si, is an educational institution from the late Joseon period. The signboard reading 'Chuncheon Seodang' and the hamabi (dismounting stone) erected at the entrance of the academy indicate that this place was Chuncheonseowon. It was built in 1756 (the 32nd year of King Yeongjo) to hold memorial rites for Uam Song Si-yeol, the leader of the Noron faction in the late Joseon period, and his descendant Unpyeong Song Neung-sang. Confucian scholars of the Noron faction in the region gathered here to pursue their studies. Abolished in 1868, only a small lecture hall of a scale similar to an ordinary hanok house remains today. Memorial rites are no longer held; each year when Gogu (a solar term in spring) arrives, descendants of the six families who once studied together here—the Yeonan Yi, Habin Yi, Byeokjin Yi, Suncheon Bak, Geochang Sin, and Seongsan Yi families—gather here to honor their ancestors and jointly manage the site.
