Chungjeolsa Shrine and Sanguijae

Chungjeolsa and Sanguijae are buildings honoring the loyalty of Eom Heung-do. Eom Heung-do was a scholar of integrity in Joseon; it is said that when King Danjong, the 6th monarch of Joseon, was assassinated in Yeongwol, he gathered the body and gave it burial. From the mid-17th century onward, a policy of commending loyal subjects and the Six Martyred Ministers arose, and Eom Heung-do's loyalty was highly esteemed: his descendants were appointed as officials, and Eom Heung-do came to be enshrined in Yuksinsa. In the 26th year of King Yeongjo (1750), a separate grave was prepared to honor Eom Heung-do's deeds, and in the 31st year of King Yeongjo (1755) a shrine called Sangjeolsa was erected. In the 33rd year of King Sunjo (1833), Sangjeolsa was elevated to the Uisan Seowon academy, but it was demolished under the Regent Heungseon Daewongun's decree abolishing seowon. Afterward, in 1900, Sanguijae, corresponding to the lecture hall of Uisan Seowon, was built, and the spirit tablet was enshrined separately in a building called Chungjeolsa.
