About this place

Doam Seowon is located in the Seobyeon village of Songcheon-ri, 1 km east of the Janggye-myeon Office in Jangsu-gun, and is also known as Doamsa. In the 15th year of King Sunjo (1815), at the shared initiative of local Confucians, a shrine (sawe) was established to commemorate the scholarship and virtue of Yi Gyeong-gwang, Yi Seong-gu, and Yu Sim-chun, and their spirit tablets were enshrined. While serving to honor worthy predecessors and provide local education, in the 5th year of King Gojong (1868) it was demolished by Heungseon Daewongun's edict to abolish seowon, and was restored by the local Confucian community in 1983. Within the grounds are a three-bay shrine (sawe) and a four-bay lecture hall; the shrine enshrines the spirit tablets of Yi Gyeong-gwang, Yi Seong-gu, and Yu Sim-chun, while the lecture hall has a wooden floor in the center and side rooms on both sides, used for various events within the seowon and as a gathering place for Confucian scholars to discuss scholarship. A memorial rite is held here every year on the 5th day of the 3rd lunar month.
