About this place

Dodong Seowon, also called Dodongseo, is located in Simlim-myeon, Gochang-gun. It is designated as a local heritage site of Gochang County. The seowon was built in 1928 inside Banghojeonsa, a study hall founded by Go Seokjin (pen name Sunam, 1856-1924) to teach students during the late Joseon period. The seowon enshrines Choe Ikhyeon (Myeonam, 1833-1906), an independence militia leader who gave his life fighting against Japanese rule, as well as Go Seokjin, Go Yejin (pen name Songcheon), and Go Yongjin (pen name Songje). These figures not only participated in the righteous army alongside Choe Ikhyeon but also sent a Korean independence petition to the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, for which they suffered repression by the Japanese colonial authorities.
