About this place

Deokumsa (Deokumam) is situated on the slopes of Deokumsan in Namwon, offering a panoramic view of the city below. Although a seated stone Buddha from the Joseon period found on the site indicates it was once a temple ground, no written records have survived to confirm its history. The current Deokumsa was founded in 1929 through the cooperation of the monk Eungsu and a lay patron named No Yeongjun. Around 1941 it served as a branch preaching hall (포교당). From the 1960s onward, the monk Hyebong Kim Wanjin oversaw extensive construction, adding a Mireukjeon (Maitreya Hall), Samseongak, a bell pavilion, a chanting hall, and various residences, greatly expanding the temple's scale. Among the structures built are a Mireukjeon and Sansingak added in 1949, a bell pavilion in the late 1960s, and expanded Samseongak and chanting hall in 1986.
