Geodongsa Temple (Yeongcheon)

Geodongsa is a branch temple of Eunhaesa—the head temple of the 10th diocese of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism—and is located on Bohyeonsan Mountain. It is said to have been founded by Great Master Uisang (625–702) during the Silla period, but its detailed history after the founding has not been handed down. Traces of temple structures remain around Geodongsa today, indicating that it was once a very large temple. The existing buildings within the precincts include the Daeungjeon (main hall), two sets of monks' quarters (yosa), and the Sansingak (mountain-spirit shrine). Among them, the Daeungjeon has a multi-bracket (dapo) gable roof and is designated as Gyeongsangbuk-do Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 137. The Daeungjeon of Geodongsa, which enshrines Sakyamuni Buddha, retains an old architectural style.
