Injeongmun Gate of Changdeokgung Palace

About this place

Injeongmun (仁政門) is the main gate of Injeongjeon, the throne hall of Changdeokgung Palace. Injeongmun is the place where the enthronement ceremony of the next king was held when there was a royal funeral (gukjang); many kings of the Joseon dynasty, Hyojong, Hyeonjong, Sukjong, Yeongjo, Sunjo, Cheoljong and Gojong among them, performed their enthronement ceremonies here and ascended the throne. The building is three bays wide and two bays deep, and its roof is a gable roof shaped like the Chinese character 八 ('eight') when seen from the side. The bracket sets (gongpo), decoratively made to support the eaves, are arranged in the multi-bracket (dapo) style, placed between the columns as well. The interior ceiling is an open (yeondeung) ceiling in which the ceiling materials are plainly visible, and the dancheong (ornamental painting) is done in the plainest manner. As the place where the ceremony of succession to the throne was held, together with the main hall Injeongjeon it is the building that best preserves the dignity and formality of the Joseon dynasty's palaces.
