About this place

This military granary site (Gunchang-ji) is located at the highest point in the southeastern section of Busosanseong Fortress. In 1915, charred grains were discovered underground here, revealing it to be the site of a storehouse where Baekje-era military provisions were stockpiled. It is located on the eastern summit of Buyeo Busosanseong (Historic Site No. 5). This area, known as Yeonwoldae (Moon-Greeting Terrace), is a wide, flat plaza; the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage conducted excavations in 1981 and 1982, which revealed the detailed layout of the building complex. The buildings were arranged in a square (ㅁ-shaped) pattern around a central open space, with structures running north, south, east, and west: approximately 70 m long, 7 m wide, and 47 cm deep in the ground. Even today, digging in this area continues to uncover charred grains, bearing witness to the tragic history of 660 CE when Sabi Fortress fell and Baekje perished under the combined Silla-Tang attack. Gunchang-ji is the most widely known among such granary sites.
