About this place

The Maeng Sa-seong historic house faces Seorasan to the west and looks toward Baebangsan to the northeast. It is one of the oldest surviving traditional Korean residences, having been safely preserved for hundreds of years. Originally the home of General Choe Yeong, the loyal subject of the late Goryeo dynasty, it was passed on to Maeng Sa-seong, who became General Choe Yeong's granddaughter's husband. The house is D-shaped (digeut shape) with a gabled roof. The timber is so charred it appears carbonized. The site is designated as a historic site under the name 'Maengssi Haengdan,' meaning the house of the Maeng clan with its ginkgo trees. Maeng Sa-seong himself is said to have planted two ginkgo trees there and pursued scholarship to teach later generations.
