About this place

Hakcheon Seowon is a Confucian academy located in Wongi-ri, Gui-myeon, Wanju-gun. It enshrines Jeong Su-hong, a civil official of the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods, as its principal figure, alongside Jeong Gon (early Joseon civil official), Jeong Dal-seo (who raised a righteous army during the Manchu invasion of 1636), Jeong Im (early Joseon civil official), and Jeong Sa-hyeop (a filial son of the late Joseon period). Hakcheon Seowon was originally built as a family shrine by the Dongnae Jeong clan, who had lived in the region for generations. When the Regent Heungseon Daewongun ordered the abolition of private academies in 1868, the buildings were demolished, but it was rebuilt in 1896 and the lecture hall was expanded again in 1990. The shrine hall, Hakcheonsa, is three bays wide and one bay deep; the lecture hall is four bays wide and two bays deep. A commemorative stele stands beside the outer gate.
