Founded in 1621 (Gwanghaegun 13th year), it was rebuilt in 1675 (Sukjong 1st year) by royal command (Sukjong's decree) at the wish of the Confucian scholars of Heungdeok-hyeon at the time. Following the natural terrain, the Myeongnyundang (study hall) is at the front and the Daeseongjeon (shrine) is at the rear, forming the typical hyanggyo arrangement of 'front study, rear shrine.' This hyanggyo venerates Confucius along with China's Four Sages (Yen Hui, Zeng Shen, Zisi, Mencius), four scholars of the Song dynasty (Zhou Dunyi, Zhu Xi, Cheng Hao, Cheng Yi), and Korea's Eighteen Sages: Seol Chong, An Hyang, Kim Goengpil, Jo Gwangjo, Yi Hwang, Yi I, Kim Jangsaeng, Kim Jip, Song Jungil, Choe Chiwon, Jeong Mongju, Jeong Yeochang, Yi Eonjok, Kim Inhu, Seong Hon, Jo Heon, Song Siyeol, and Bak Sechae. Along the hyanggyo's entry path stands the Heungdeok Dangangiju (a flag pole pedestal listed as a Tangible Cultural Heritage), and nearby there was said to have been a temple called Galgongsa until the Goryeo period.
