Hogye Seowon

About this place

Hogye Seowon, set on a hill overlooking the Nakdong River at a glance, is a representative seowon of the Andong region. It was built in 1573 (the 6th year of King Seonjo of Joseon) in Dogok-dong, Wolgok-myeon, under the name Yeogang Seowon. At first it enshrined the memorial tablet of Toegye and held rites for him, but in 1620 (the 12th year of King Gwanghaegun) the tablets of Hakbong Kim Seong-il and Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong were also enshrined together. In 1676 (the 2nd year of King Sukjong), it received from the king the name 'Hogye' along with land, slaves and other grants. It was demolished under the seowon abolition order of Heungseon Daewongun, and seven years later only the lecture hall was newly built, remaining so to this day. Owing to the construction of the Andong Dam, it was moved and rebuilt at its current location in 1973. A council meeting is held here once each year. At present, Toegye's tablet is enshrined at Dosan Seowon, Hakbong's at Imcheon Seowon, and Seoae's at Byeongsan Seowon. (Source: Korea Heritage Service)
