About this place

Hwasan Seowon was founded in 1624 (the 2nd year of King Injo) in Junghwasan-dong, Jeonju. It received a royal charter in 1662 (the 3rd year of King Hyeonjong), with Song Si-yeol composing the commemorative stele inscription and Song Jun-gil writing the characters. It was demolished in 1869 (the 6th year of King Gojong) but in 1988 a restoration project was undertaken in Sinwon-ri, Soyang-myeon, Wanju-gun, with the cooperation of Jeolla-do Confucians and descendants of the Okcheon Gyeongam branch. The shrine has three bays in front and one on the side, while the lecture hall has four bays in front and three on the side. The commemorative stele located in Junghwasan-dong, Jeonju is designated as Jeonbuk Cultural Heritage No. 4. The seowon enshrines figures who served as Deputy Minister of Rites and Senior Councillor of the State Council, as well as Song In-su, who worked to promote scholarship even after being demoted to Jeolla Province Governor.
