About this place

Seosan Hyanggyo was established outside the western gate in the 6th year of King Taejong's reign (1406) and later relocated to its current site by County Magistrate Choe Yeo-rim in the 7th year of King Seonjo's reign (1574). The buildings within the hyanggyo include the Daeseongjeon shrine hall, the Myeongnyundang lecture hall, East and West Wings (Dongmu and Seomu), student dormitories (Dongjae and Seojae), inner and outer gates (Naesammun and Oesammun). The Daeseongjeon, the space for memorial rites, is 3 bays wide and 3 bays deep, with a hip-and-gable roof (paljakjibung) shaped like the Chinese character eight (八) when viewed from the side. The structure is well-preserved as a representative example of Joseon-era hyanggyo construction.
